Story here, with many links. Some of the schools mentioned (like Florida State) are, in fact, doing significant hiring, notwithstanding budget cuts. Here's a question that readers of my philosophy blog have raised: namely, isn't in a violation of the employment contracts to force furloughs on faculty and then cut their salaries proportionally? I hope some well-informed person in Cyberspace will blog the answer and send a trackback here!
